Illegal imports, especially animal and fish products, can pose a threat to human and animal health, spread animal disease and invasive plant species, and lead to loss of wildlife and biodiversity.

Top 5 food categories of illegal import and food trade into EU Smuggling is an ancient practice and is the illegal trading of goods across borders, the import of contraband goods, or the movement of goods into or out of a country or trading region often to circumvent tariffs or legal duty. Meat and poultry products combined received the highest number of information notifications while fruits, vegetables and fishery products were mostly rejected at the border (Figure 2). Attempt to illegally import was the highest sub-category of illegal import and food trade in all 5 food categories (Table 2).
